About Us

Last updated: November 4, 2025

Board Foot (BDFT) Calculator is a focused tool for fast, trustworthy board-foot estimates. We built it because woodworkers, builders, and shop managers shouldn’t have to wrestle with spreadsheets or guesswork to figure out material volume.

What makes it useful

  • Instant results: values update as you type using the standard BF formula (T in × W in × L ft ÷ 12).
  • Real-world presets: quick-fill buttons for common dressed sizes (e.g., 2×4 actual 1.5″ × 3.5″) so estimates align with what you actually buy.
  • Precision controls: choose decimal places to match your rounding and purchasing practice.
  • BF per linear foot: see the per-foot figure for a given cross-section to estimate long runs quickly.
  • Totals & clipboard: handle multiple pieces with quantity and copy per-piece or total BF in a click.
  • More than BF: we also display cubic feet and cubic inches for the same inputs.
  • Cost estimator: enter a price per BF to estimate spend—useful for budgeting before you call suppliers.

How we think about accuracy

A board foot is a volume estimate and real lumber varies. We highlight nominal vs. actual sizes and assume dressed dimensions for presets. For logs, different regions and mills rely on scaling rules (Doyle, Scribner, International 1/4); we reference these for context so users can keep estimates consistent with local practice.

Product principles

  • Clarity first. Numbers and labels should be obvious at a glance—especially on mobile.
  • Privacy by default. No login required; calculator inputs aren’t stored on our servers.
  • Accessibility. Keyboard-friendly inputs, meaningful focus states, and readable typography.
  • Performance. Lightweight front-end that responds instantly on mid-range devices.

What’s next

  • More presets and unit helpers.
  • Optional save/compare scenarios (with clear consent and controls).
  • Export to CSV/PDF for quotes and takeoffs.
  • Educational notes for common cuts, waste factors, and purchasing patterns.
