How the BDFT Calculator Works

A board foot (BF) is a volume measure for lumber equal to 144 in³ (12 in × 12 in × 1 in). The calculator uses the standard formula:

  • BF = (Thickness in inches × Width in inches × Length in feet) ÷ 12
  • For multiple pieces: Total BF = BF per piece × Quantity

Values update as you type. Use the presets for common dressed sizes (e.g., 2×4 actual 1.5 in × 3.5 in).

What is a Board Foot?

One board foot is a volume of wood equal to 144 cubic inches. You can also think of it as 1 ft² of surface at 1 inch thick, or 1/12 of a cubic foot.

Because most lumber is sold in “1×, 2×” sizes but planed to slightly smaller actual dimensions, many calculations use actual thickness and width.

Nominal vs. Actual Sizes

A nominal 2×4 actually measures about 1.5 in × 3.5 in after drying and planing. For BF estimates, using actual sizes gives more realistic totals. This tool’s presets fill in typical dressed sizes.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many board feet is a 2x4x8?
Using actual dressed size 1.5″ × 3.5″ × 8′ → (1.5 × 3.5 × 8) ÷ 12 = 3.5 BF. Using nominal 2″ × 4″ × 8′ → (2 × 4 × 8) ÷ 12 = 5.333 BF.
How to calculate BDFt?
BF = (T in × W in × L ft) ÷ 12. Multiply by quantity for a total across pieces.
How much is 1000 board feet of lumber?
1,000 BF is an MBF. Cost = price per BF × 1000 (varies by species, grade, and market).
How to calculate BDFt in a log?
Logs are typically scaled by rules (Doyle, Scribner, International 1/4) using small-end diameter inside bark and length. Choose the rule common in your region or buyer’s request for consistent results.
